I now root for the Lakers to trade Mr. Bryant.

I may even start pulling for the Celtics this year. Gosh that makes me sick. Actually, I like the Jazz...No, NO, NO! I'm still a Laker guy. If they can just play some defense then maybe...

Are ther any athletes around anymore worthy of being the Sports Heroes we used to have? I've migrated away from following most sports, except for USA Badminton and BYU Football.

I don't follow sports to find heroes. I just enjoy the athletic competition. Having said that, I am sick of all the prima donnas, selfish, out of touch oafs that are in sports. And thats just on the BYU Football team.

I'd define an 'oaf' as someone who can't run. As in at ALL.

I think that I agree with Eric.

I think the Lakers should get back Carl Malone...the mail man. He delivers.

I think I should get back to Carl's Jr...the food man. They don't deliver. Unfortunately!!!!

you are more then welcome to join the fantastic franchise of the San Antonio Spurs and their amazing fan base. Their team is led by Tim Duncan who recently signed a two year extension and took $11M less than the offer so the team can rebuild after he leaves. What a team player!

I am impressed with players who take less money than they could otherwise get. Which raises the question: How much money goes one person need? How much money would you need (annual income) to fulfill all the dreams you have a a lifestyle? Just for discussion, leave out the idea of righteousness - I mean we all love people who we would assist if we were rich - but just to fulfill your own whimsical worldly dreams what would you need? My dreams would include a 5 acre horseranch with a 2700 sqaure home. A 4wheel drive toyota tacoma. Everything else, I already have. I figure about 150,000 per year would do it. If I made 2 million per year I would probably just buy too many suits and fish tacos.

Team player? psshh... Don't get me wrong, I love Tim Duncan. But if your going to bring up money. Don't leave out that he took 40 million before leaving out 11 million. -dave

Mark: Besides, shouldn't you be a Toronto Raptors fan?

Sorry, I am Mark (Sadie's Brother in law) that love the Spurs. Although he did take the $40M, I've seen Charles Oakley demanding $2m when he attempted his return when he probably deserves the veterans minimum or retired vets minimum (if they keep reinstating these retired).
Hal, I like your desired finances.
Amanda once was asked in institute on how much she thought was enough(prior to marriage or mission), she replied $250k a year.
It's interesting to see how people make so much and that still isn't enough. You have guys like latrell spreewell who made millions and is still BKed...

Hey Mark, its good to hear from you. Didn't Mr. Sprewell turn down like 3m and then no one else offered him a contract? I love stories like that. (my sadistic side)

you know, i dont really keep track of what the big league guys make. all i know is that i probably would be overwhelmed if i knew how much the whole nba players put together would make in a year.

There are only 3 sports contests worth watching each year:
March Madness
College football (even with the BCS mess, it's still so much fun to watch)
Major League Baseball playoffs

I just read a headline today that said an NHL hockey team was 13-1 or something. Now, I read ESPN.com everyday, and my first thought upon seeing that headline was, "Hockey is going on right now?"

I would rather watch hockey than Kobe Bryant cry.

I can't even finish reading all these posts without getting sick to my stomach. All this talk about ginormous amounts money. Without the law enforcement and military we wouldn't have the luxury of "Professional" sports.

You know how much money is poured into the military? Oh, yeah, you do, you who screw in $80 BOLTS. But, yeah I agree, the amount of money pro athletes make and the crying that goes along with it is kinda sad. But, then again, it's supply and demand that lets such things be, and that same supply and demand economy the athletes thrive in lets us all live as high a standard of living that we do, and that form of economy plays at least as much a role as any protective forces we have. In fact, the supply and demand thing also makes it so your chopper bolts cost $80 a pop. That and political hanky-panky I'm sure.

Count me in for $85,000 a year. I'll invest wisely to make up the difference for anything else I may want.

I'll take a home (size?) with a woodshop out back, a photo studio, and a gallery to show the work of anyone with anything worth showing, and a library stocked with books attached to a room to write in. Then I'll want a few Mac Pros with 30" monitors and a Canon Mach whatever is the latest and a few additional lenses. Oh, and about 5 more flashes. Hmmm, maybe I'll want $150,000 that first year...

I read Sadie's line about the Mailman, Karl Malone and was reminded of a Scottie Pippen quip during the NBA finals in the 90s. The Bulls were dusting off the Jazz, and typical Malone was stinking it up. The Jazz had just lost on a Sunday night, if I remember right, and Scottie said something like,

"The mailman don't deliver on Sunday."

One of the all-time best sports lines.

Along with Joe's comment about the sports worth watching... NFL does a great job (except their overtime rule... just a matter of time)

Another sport that is worth watching is Water polo.

For those of you that are Jazz fans... probably not many since most of you are Laker fans... I golfed with Frank Layden (Former Jazz coach) in a charity tournament. He autographed my picture with him and wrote "Jazz 07!", so I autographed his and wrote "Spurs 07". Muwa hahahaha
